In this article I explore the 3 crucial factors that will affect your career change and show you how to prepare a career change plan.

Prior to making a career change, it’s important to understand the changes that might take place in your lifestyle and how you will adjust. It is also important to understand the benefits that will come from making such a change. It is this preparation, both in the form of specific actions you can take, as well as subtle shifts in your mindset, that will help you prepare your career change plan.

Victoria, where I live, is one of the most fire-prone areas in the world. Fortunately, I live close to Melbourne CBD and do not live near dense forests, where the fire risk is highest. For those who do live in higher risk areas, having a fire plan is a crucial factor that will reduce the impact of the potential dangers of fire and damage to property.

Just like preparing for a fire, every decision you make in your career will have some consequences – both good and bad. How you navigate your career change therefore requires careful consideration so that you are in control of the elements you are able to influence. Being prepared is the best way for you to ensure you achieve the success you deserve. You need a career change plan.

3 Crucial Factors That Will Affect Your Career Change and How to Prepare

There are three crucial factors that will affect your career change – and how you prepare for them by developing a career change plan.

1. Know Thyself

The first crucial factor that will affect your career change is how well you know yourself and understand what skills, experience and character strengths you offer or can develop further.

The preparation required is to conduct some self assessments, including the following:

Make a list of your core skills – what is is that you are good at?

Make a list of your developing skills – what are the areas you enjoy but could work on further?

Update your resume and LinkedIn profile and ensure they capture all of your relevant work experience, describing the breadth and scope of each role and any key achievements specific to these roles. Also make sure you’ve documented relevant education, certifications, voluntary experience and awards.

Understand your character traits. This free Character Strengths survey thanks by Via is an excellent way to do this.

You are now MUCH better equipped to tackle the first crucial factor that will affect your career change – knowing thyself.

2. Understand What You Want

The second crucial factor that will affect your career change is understanding what you want. LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise 2022 report identifies 15 roles you could explore right now in Australia. However, you must do the work in terms of understanding what it is that you want before diving into roles that are popular or in demand.

To prepare for this in your career change plan you need to figure out what you want from your next job. Here are a list of questions to help you determine what you want:

Do you want to work remotely?

Do you want more flexibility in your schedule?

What particular elements of your skill do you feel will be helpful in the long run?

What is it that you want out of your next job?

Do you want to work on something more creative?

Do you want to move up the ladder and have more responsibility?

3. Know How the World Works

The third crucial factor that will affect your career change is understanding how the world works and realising that you can’t just hope for change. You need to really understand the employment landscape for the role and industries you are considering changing to.

The Secret was a best selling book a number of years ago. The premise of the book was that you need to visualise your goals clearly in order to attract what you want. While I am a big believer in visualisation, I also know that to be successful in a career change, you need to consider the following factors:

Financial and personal stability – what are the financial parameters you need to consider for future roles? What type of responsibilities do you have outside of work and how can you ensure your career change helps you incorporate these to create a better work / life balance?

Ability and skills – the self assessments will enable you to develop a clear picture of where you are now and where you may need retraining to up-skill for certain roles.

Network and connections – the people who know and trust you are the ones who can open doors for you in new roles and new industries. Rather than ask for a job, seek their advice and opinions – you will get a much warmer response.

Understanding and adapting to a new work culture and environment – by identifying your top character traits in the self assessment you can uncover some of your preferences. Carefully consider the type of work culture and environment that will bring out the best in you. Some people love the challenge of working in demanding and fast paced environments. Others prefer a slower pace. You need to explore organisations and opportunities that are best suited to your preferences.

Key Actions To Prepare for Your Career Change

Taking all of this into consideration, to properly prepare for any possible changes as part of your career change plan, you need to:

A. Investigate the labor market and find out what skills are in demand at the moment

Reviewing LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise 2022 report is a good start, along with setting up job alerts on LinkedIn, SEEK, Ethical Jobs and any specific industry based job sites. I also recommend you speak to friends and colleagues who already work in the industry you are exploring. You may also like to reach out to specialist recruiters who are currently advertising roles you’re potentially interested in doing in the future.

B. Get feedback from people who have done similar career changes

By speaking with people in your network who’ve made similar changes, you will get the most reliable assessment of what’s really going to be involved. Before doing this, carefully assess what you know about this individual’s values and character traits, as they may not view the world in the same way you do. This does not mean their advice isn’t helpful, it just means you need to understand the lens with which they view the world. Something they may have experienced as being difficult or challenging may be a welcome change for you. What’s important is that you remain curious and understand what their experience has been and what insight you can draw from this for your own circumstances.

C. Talk to an expert

It’s essential that you stay up-to-date with the latest information that’s relevant to your career change. If you’re exploring specific re-training or up-skilling, always seek out the industry’s peak body for the required standards. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how helpful people can be when you ask for their advice.

If you are moving into active job search, seek the support of a Career Practitioner who can help you set up your job search tools and prepare you for the job application and interviewing process.

If you’ve taken the time to consider these three crucial factors and the key actions to prepare for your career change you are well on the way to achieving the success you deserve.

And if you have any questions along the way, I’m here to help. Book a complimentary 15 minute Career Chat to ask your questions.

It may feel like, not that long ago, you were gainfully employed in a great role and then ‘boom’, there’s been a restructure or a round of changes at your organisation, and your role was impacted. Or perhaps the changes you experienced during the Covid-19 related restrictions made you decide it was time to stop talking about leaving the job or the boss you hate and make a change.

You were once filled with enthusiasm, but your confidence is starting to erode. It’s been a few years since you’ve been in active job search like this, and the rules of engagement seem to have changed!

When you are actively looking for a new job, it can be really hard work and feel like an uphill battle. You’ve set up job alerts on the major job sites, and the overwhelming task of dealing with recruiters and hiring managers who may or may not call you back to provide feedback or an update on the status of your application.

You’re also learning how to best navigate the online application process, sound cheerful, professional and approachable during phone interviews and you’re doing your best to keep the dog and children quiet during video interviews.

And we haven’t even mentioned the emotional toll of the job search battle and how you’re feeling about the inevitable rejection that naturally comes with applying for jobs in a competitive employment market.

So let’s start with this…

Are you okay?

Are you speaking kindly to yourself?

Do you have a great support crew helping you stay positive?

The good news is that you are not alone and I am here to help. I work with professionals who are in their 30s, 40s and 50s who are in active job search and starting to wonder why they are not having the success they deserve when applying for roles they know they could do.

When I reflect on all of the clients I’ve worked with, what makes them successful is that they’re confident, they sell themselves and they have put all of the right tools together. They do the hard work and are prepared.

“But I feel like you just described me Marina!” I hear you say. I hope that’s true, and today’s article is your opportunity to check if there are any gaps in how you’re tackling your job search so you can win the job search battle. I’ll cover what I recommend you need to do to be successful in active job search and you can check and address any gaps in your battle plan.

The 3 Ingredients for Successful Job Search

When I work with clients in active job search, there is a certain element of relief when I explain to new clients that job search success is actually a very simple formula. It looks like this:

When you get your resume right, write exceptional cover letters and update your LinkedIn profile you are giving yourself the best chance of success. This is because you are prepared for the job search battle and this preparation gives you confidence, which will give you greater success in interviews. I’m not saying winning the job search battle is easy, I’m saying it takes a lot of hard work and preparation. And you can do it!

Let’s start with ingredient number one, your resume.

Ingredient Number One: Your Resume

Most people now understand that the Australian job market is highly competitive and that recruiters and hiring managers are spoilt for choice. Here is my comprehensive list of ‘must do’ items to set you up for success when writing your resume.

You must go to battle with a well prepared master resume that you then adapt for each role you apply for. Expect to develop many versions of this resume when you are in active job search applying for multiple roles.

Consider your audience when writing your resume and use the wording they use in the job advertisement to describe what they are looking for in a successful candidate.

Your resume should be 2-4 pages and must showcase all the relevant information.

A biography is important because it can grasp the reader immediately.

As a general guide, your professional summary should be no longer than 3-4 sentences and include years of service & industry; synopsis of types of responsibilities pertaining to the job; highlight key attributes

Highlight achievements wherever possible, include responsibilities written with metrics, provide the scope of the role (geographic, client/ industry type, no. direct reports, etc), include the improvements / contributions / achievements in each role, highlight what is pertinent and adapt the job titles if they are not well understood industry terms

As a general rule, I recommend you list the following categories in your resume: Name and contact details; Bio / Professional Summary; Competencies relevant to role / job application; Professional experience summary relevant to role / job application; Career timeline and Education.

The most common file format is MS Word. You may also be asked to submit your cover letter and resume in PDF format.

And now let’s look at your next vital ingredient, your killer cover letter.

Ingredient Number Two: Your Cover Letter

Every single role you apply for must have a cover letter tailored to that role, with the letter to a person rather than just the general Sir/Madam. This means you need to take the time to research the role and company, or the recruiter who may be representing the company, and do your best to find the name of the key point of contact who will be reviewing the job applications.

Key information to include when you set out your cover letter is:

Your address and contact details usually on the right side at the top

The employer’s (or recruiter’s) name and address usually on the left side

The date

Dear (Insert Name)

Personalised and relevant information

Address all key selection criteria in a table

Mention resume and sign off.

Make sure your cover letter is highlighting the right information so that a potential employer gives you the big tick for the interview. I suggest you put yourself in the hiring manager’s seat. Make your cover letter easy to read and respond specifically to the requirements of the role, in summary form.

Address all Key Selection Criteria ‘head on’ in a table that highlights how your experience, educations and skills meets the requirements for the role. With this approach you actively demonstrate that you understand what they are looking for and how you meet the criteria. It is tailored, to the point and easy for the prospective employer to put you in the YES pile.

Then mention that your resume is attached and finish with a call-to-action such as requesting an interview or asking to meet before signing off politely.

Ingredient Number Three: Your LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is not your resume. What you are addressing on LinkedIn is a higher level or more general version of what you detail in your resume. LinkedIn is where you showcase your professional brand and includes key elements such as the About section that provides an overview of your experience, skills and personal attributes. You can let recruiters and hiring managers, as well as your LinkedIn community know you are in active job search with the Open To Work feature. Find out more here.

LinkedIn is search engine optimised, so it’s very important to use this online space wisely! You have 120 characters in the headline and 2000 characters in the About section of your LinkedIn Profile.

Here are some critical success factors to consider when writing your LinkedIn Profile.

Professional Photo:
This can be taken by a photographer, or a friend with a good camera or phone camera and must show you in professional attire. Avoid pictures with others, pictures of you on holidays or at a recent wedding.

Relevant Information:
Your information must be relevant to your ideal employer and optimised so you will get found on LinkedIn. the sections that are most important are the Open To, About Section, Experience, Education, Skills and Summary.

Focus on Recruiters & Hiring Managers:
Before updating your LinkedIn Profile consider ‘What do I want to be known for?” and “Who am I trying to influence?”. Forgot about your friends and colleagues and focus on future employers, recruiters and hiring managers.

About Section:
The first 1-2 lines of this section are the most important as they are what people see first and will encourage them to click through and read on. Be personable and speak directly to the reader..

Experience:
Clearly articulate the scope and breadth of each role and demonstrate key achievements in this area via your experience and key achievement statements. Briefly describe your accountabilities and then focus on what you have achieved in that role. Provide as much relevant evidence of your achievements as possible, with clear metrics (e.g. % increases in business growth, if you’re in a business development role). Also use words such as ‘Successfully” and “Consistently” to communicate a more compelling achievement.

Recommendations:
The best LinkedIn recommendations are ones that offer specific results or examples. They are just like a written reference and can be a very powerful way to reinforce that you are the professional who potential employers need to meet.

It’s now time to prepare for battle!

Remember . . . .

While some people choose to take a career break to care for children, elderly parents or loved ones, others choose to take time off from work to pursue a desire to travel, enjoy a simpler life and slower pace, or to recharge and reconnect with those around them.

If you’re transitioning back to work after a long break, getting back to work requires you to be flexible open and patient. You are planning to move forward into a new season of your career and it’s likely to be different to what you have been used to doing, and perhaps even different to the work you did before taking the break.

Today’s article provides a checklist that will ensure you are prepared for the transition back to work. Ideally, I recommend you give yourself three to six months to work through this list before returning to work. However, if your timeline is shorter than this, you will still find this article helpful to navigate the changing nature of work and the best way for you to engage in a meaningful role you can enjoy and be paid for!

1. Identify Your Skills

A great starting point is to make a list of your current skills and see what types of jobs would be suitable with your skill set. The Job Outlook website is provided by the Australian Government and provides a guide to Australian skills based on a number of very useful tools including:

Skills Match – to get ideas for new jobs that use your skills

Career Quiz – to discover careers that match your work style

Explore Australia – to explore careers in demand where you live

Future Outlook – to find industries and jobs expected to grow

Also see point 3 about having conversations with people who know you and have worked with you to help identify the skills you are good at.

2. Identify Your Priorities

Even though you may have developed a comprehensive list of skills you are good at, it’s essential that you take the time to think about what are the priorities for the type of work you wish to do.

Examples of factors to consider when you develop your list of priorities are:

Use of skills you enjoy using

Opportunities to develop new skills

Job Location

Flexible / remote working options

No. Days per week / fortnight

Remuneration

Type of Work

Culture of team

Style of manager

Challenge level of work

Designer and educator Silvia Grimaldi found clarity on what mattered when returning to work after maternity leave:

“Put value in things that are valuable for your career and the direction you want to go in. Everything else can take a backseat.”

3. Have Lots of Conversations

Speaking to people who know you, have worked with you or who work in the industries you are interested in exploring can help you from a number of perspectives.

It’s sometimes hard to know what we are good at. Asking others for feedback in this area is an invaluable step. Speaking to people who know you and have worked with you can help you identify your skills, as suggested in my first point. And when you start to see patterns in the skills people are suggesting you are good at, you know you are starting to uncover more about yourself. Self discovery is the key to a fulfilled life!

4. Do Your Research

With globalisation, technological progress and demographic changes in Australia changing the way we work and changing the types of skills employers are requiring of their employees, it’s important you take the time to have the right conversations with the right people to explore where there is a suitable match for your skills and the demand for these skills.

Research the industries you’re keen to learn more about and see what is happening in the industry. You can do online research via the Job Outlook website and spend time on LinkedIn and Twitter, reading the updates and opinions from the leaders of industry to stay informed about changes and opportunities you can potentially explore.

Speaking to people in new or existing industries is an excellent way to reconnect with old colleagues and get up to speed with what’s been happening in the workplace and industry since you’ve taken a break. Use LinkedIn to look up old work colleagues and see which industries they are working in now. For those who have made the transition back to work, or who are working in industries you are keen to learn more about, arrange a catch up and ask them for their perspective and advice.

5. Identify Possible Retraining Up-Skilling Opportunities

Check all of your qualifications and accreditations. Are they current? Will you be required to have these for the types of roles you wish to apply for? Once you’ve identified potential roles or industries you are keen to pursue work in, you may also identify a gap in your skills and need to undertake some re-training or up-skilling.

Do not panic! It’s good for you to refresh old skills and learn new ones. Returning to study also demonstrates to future employers that you are committed to professional development, which is a positive attribute and may just be the factor that gives you the edge over other candidates.

The myskills website provides a starting point for finding and comparing the outcomes, durations and locations of nationally-accredited training from registered training providers.

For Australians aged 45 to 70 years old, the $17.4 million Skills Checkpoint Program provides eligible Australians with advice and guidance on transitioning into new roles within their current industry or pathways to a new career, including referral to relevant education and training options.

It is a program to support 20,000 Australians over 4 years by providing targeted support to help them stay in or get into the workforce. Visit the Skills Checkpoint Program website to check your eligibility and access the program.

6. Volunteer

Volunteering will help you increase your confidence, meet new people and learn more about the particular areas you choose to volunteer in. To find out more about opportunities to volunteer in your local area visit the Seek Volunteer website.

There is no better way to get to know an industry or a role than immersing yourself in it! And if you’ve taken a long break from work, volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, since you are meeting regularly with a group of people with common interests. Once you have momentum, it’s easier to branch out and make more friends and contacts.

7. Meet with a Professional

Engaging the services of a career consultant is an increasingly popular choice for people who are transitioning back to work. With a changing and increasingly competitive job market. partnering with a career consultant to assist your return to the workforce can make the transition:

Less overwhelming

More productive

Easier to navigate.

The career consultant spends most of their days (and some weekends!) helping people who are looking for work. This means they are in the best possible position to understand the market, strengths, roles and the success factors for the geographic markets they work in.

Today’s article will help you build your confidence so you can use your emotions to propel your actions, and move your fear to focus.

As you were planning what 2020 was going to look like, there’s no way you could have predicted what unfolded. Bushfires, and then a pandemic in the form of COVID-19. The way we live has changed for the short term and may change for ever. In the space of a few weeks, people around the globe have faced illness, death, and social isolation. The Australian economy is also taking a hit with extensive layoffs as businesses try to stay afloat.

If we have not met before, I am SO glad you found me! My name is Marina Pitisano and I partner professionals who are in active job search. I help you stand out from the crowd by teaching you the key components of a successful job search. My goal is to get your job application on top of the ‘let’s interview these people’ pile.

1. Have You Acknowledged How You Are Feeling?

For those clients I’ve worked with pre and during the current economic climate, I always like to start with where they are right now. This means acknowledging and naming the emotions you are experiencing. Don’t ignore these emotions, because they are real and may hold you back in the job search process if unaddressed. For so many of my clients and colleagues, the emotion we are feeling right now is grief. This is described beautifully in a Harvard Business Review article, by Scott Berinato, That Discomfort You are Feeling Right Now is Grief. If you have been feeling unsettled, you may enjoy reading his perspective.

The changes are happening fast and hard, without much planning. And it’s natural for you to feel scared, anxious, and even concerned for your plans for the future as you watch many of your career plans, hopes, and dreams come to a grinding halt.

The fear is real. But there’s good news too! You can use your fear to help drive you to focus on what you can control.

2. Don’t Assume

Don’t assume there are no jobs. While certain industries will not be employing at the rate that they were, there are still organisations advertising roles and head hunters looking for professionals with certain skill sets. The events around you are not an excuse for in-action. I recommend you investigate what is available. Job seekers should be using this time to do research and identify industries and companies you may be suited to working in and then seeing if they are hiring. There are 2 steps here:

1. Visit jobjumpstart.gov.au

This offers resources and activities to help you work out what jobs might suit you. It also provides practical tips to help you tailor your job search to employers you want to work for.

2. When you’ve done this work you can then visit the Government’s Job Search site here. This website updates all the jobs daily!

LinkedIn is also a resource available for researching individuals, prospective employers and industry information. When you have developed a list of target companies, you can use LinkedIn to find a great deal of useful information.

3. Map Your Skills

In addition to researching different industries, consider jobs outside your current scope. Forget job titles for a moment and think about the skills you use in your current role. For example: data analysis in Excel, project management, system administration, reception, sales, programming, writing, design, research, or public speaking.

Once you have the list, research other jobs that overlap with those skills. For example, you might move from being a Business Analyst for a construction company where Excel skills were a small part of your job to a new role analysing Big Data for a marketing company.

LinkedIn and job search sites will be very helpful and you can expand any job alerts you have set up via job search sites to industries and roles you identified you may be suited suit.

Side note – some people find mapping their skills very hard. If you’re struggling with this too, I can help you review your transferable skills. Please book a 15 minute career chat here to get started with this step.

4. Set Intentional Goals

How are your goal setting skills these days? I recommend you consider both your short term and long term goals. To be intentional means to do something deliberately or on purpose.

1. What can you intentionally do NOW?

e.g. who do you know who works in industries who are employing? Make a list.
What actions can you be taking to put you in a stronger position to apply for roles?
Read on and think about how you can be sharpening your job search tools.
Who can you arrange a phone call with to ask for their advice? Call them!
What professional advice can you engage to assist you right now?

2. What do you need to focus on intentionally for the future?

Think about the industries and your plans and even consider potential opportunities to up-skill to set you up for changes in and beyond your industry to ensure you remain employable in the future.

5. Sharpen your Tools

Your key job search tools are your LinkedIn Profile and resume. They are different and need your attention! Get these tools ready and make sure they are showcasing your strengths, achievements with clarity and focus.

Perhaps you’ve been stood down and want to look for another role outside of your organisation, but you haven’t realised the importance of your CV or resume as a record of achievements to prepare you for now. It’s okay, I am here to help. Here are some tips to help you sharpen your Resume.

Capture the following key points for each role:

Role title

Name of organisation you worked for

Scope / breadth of role (e.g. how many people reported to you, what geographic area did you cover, etc)

Value of Budget or P&L you managed

Key Responsibilities

Ideally I would also like you to include your key achievements, although this is often an area that my clients find difficult to write down and something I can talk through with you to tease out the relevant information for each role.

What about your LinkedIn Profile? How’s that looking? If you’d like to use LinkedIn to assist your job search, your LinkedIn Profile needs to include a professional photo of you and relevant information. What you write in your LinkedIn Profile must be relevant to your ideal employer and optimised so you will get found on LinkedIn. Fill in your About, Experience, Education and Skills sections. Also look at your recommendations, because they can be an effective way to reinforce that you are the professional who potential employers need to meet.

6. Tap into your Network

When I mentioned setting intentional goals, I asked the question about who you know in your network who could be providing some guidance to you right now. Use this time to tap into or build your professional network. Expand your connections on LinkedIn by sending personalised invitations to everyone you’ve worked with, including colleagues, managers, suppliers and any other relevant stakeholders.

Even consider going beyond this and connecting with people you know through sports, activities and hobbies outside of work. In my experience it’s people who know you who will be inclined to recommend you for roles or help provide guidance about the companies who may be hiring right now. Treat these connections with respect. Don’t expect them to find you a job, but do ask if they can provide any guidance on what’s happening in their industry. Even if you haven’t found the right job, signaling you’re looking can help you find opportunities in the future.

Follow these steps and you’ll be well on the way to moving your fear to focus to help you create more potential job opportunities for yourself.

Learn how to elevate your personal brand with insider tips and techniques.

Video is a powerful communication tool for building trust and engagement in the online world. In this podcast, Yana Martens shares with us her insider tips and techniques to help you feel at ease in front of a camera and to help you elevate your personal brand.

These insights have never been more important than right now – a time when more people are working in isolation from home and connecting via video conferencing to the workforce. It’s equally important for those who are job searching with recruiters and employers now moving to video interviews. Empower yourself with the knowledge on how to present yourself and put your best self forward.

Yana’s expertise is based on an understanding of self-image and human behaviour from a degree in psychology, combined with years in front and behind the camera, as a model and photographer.

Yana helps her clients elevate their personal brand by increasing self-awareness, encourages them to get out of the comfort zone and face their fears of being seen and judged. With over 14 years’ experience in front of the camera she knows exactly how it feels and how to address all negative thinking that might arise.
