In today’s competitive job market, the saying “It’s not what you know, but who you know” has never been more relevant. While having the right skills and qualifications is essential, building a robust professional network can be the game-changer that propels your career forward.

Networking isn’t just about handing out business cards or adding connections on LinkedIn. Networking involves forming meaningful relationships, exchanging knowledge and opening doors to new opportunities.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career journey, effective networking can unlock hidden job prospects, provide valuable industry insights and ultimately lead you to your dream role. In this blog, I explore the transformative power of networking and offer practical tips to help you leverage your connections for career success.

Access the Hidden Job Market

In the landscape of the job market, it’s often said that the best opportunities are not advertised. This phenomenon, known as the “hidden job market,” exists for several reasons, highlighting the critical importance of personal networks in job searching. The reasons include:

Cost and efficiency:
Advertising job roles, using a recruitment company, screening candidates and interviews requires significant resources and can become a costly exercise. S so it makes sense for a businesses, business owners and hiring managers to turn to their professional networks.

Trust and reliability:
Hiring through personal referral sources yields candidates who come with a trusted recommendation. This can significantly reduce the perceived risk associated with hiring a new employee.

Access to passive candidates
Many highly qualified professionals are not actively looking for new job opportunities and may not respond to job advertisements. However, they might be open to considering a new role if approached directly by a trusted contact.

The Power of Networking

It is estimated that up to 85% of job openings are filled through networking. Don’t underestimate the power of building connections and networking. A significant percentage of jobs are filled through referrals and internal networks. Networking helps you tap into these hidden opportunities.

Networking is critical for job hunting for several key reasons:

Building Relationships:
Developing relationships with professionals in your field can lead to valuable advice, mentorship and guidance. These connections can offer insights into industry trends, company cultures and job openings.

Enhanced Credibility:
When someone within your network refers you for a job, it often carries more weight than a cold application. A recommendation from a trusted employee can significantly boost your chances of securing an interview and ultimately getting hired.

Information and Insights:
Networking allows you to gather firsthand information about potential employers, including their hiring processes, expectations, and work environment. This knowledge can help you tailor your applications and prepare more effectively for interviews.

Career Development and Growth:
Networking is not just about finding a job; it’s about long-term career growth. Regularly interacting with professionals in your industry can help you stay updated on new developments, enhance your skills, and open up opportunities for advancement.

Support and Motivation:
Job hunting can be a challenging and sometimes discouraging process. A strong network provides emotional support, encouragement, and motivation. Peers who have gone through similar experiences can offer advice and help you stay positive and motivated.

Skill Development:
Networking events, professional groups and industry conferences provide opportunities to develop soft skills such as communication, negotiation and public speaking. These skills are valuable in the job market and can enhance your employability.

Creating Opportunities:
By actively networking, you position yourself to be in the right place at the right time. Opportunities can arise unexpectedly through conversations and connections that might not have happened otherwise.

Personal Branding:
Regularly interacting with professionals and sharing your expertise helps build your personal brand. Over time, you become known as a knowledgeable and reliable professional in your field, which can attract job offers and professional opportunities.

Remember, networking is a multifaceted strategy that enhances your job search by providing access to opportunities, offering critical industry insights, building your credibility and supporting your long-term career development.

Networking plays a crucial role in the job search process. It involves building and maintaining professional relationships with individuals who can provide information, guidance, referrals and support in your job search and career prospects.

You may have heard the term “It’s not what you know,’ it’s who you know”? While this may seem a little unfair, particularly if you know you are the right candidate for a role, it can indeed be the reality of job search. There is a hidden job market where up to 70% of jobs are not advertised. These roles are most commonly filled through referrals and networks. Hence the importance to build your network, build genuine connections and nurture professional relationships. You want to be sure that YOU are front of mind when someone is recruiting or requesting referrals for job applicants from trusted sources.

The Power of Networking for Job Search

Networking can be one of the most powerful tools in your job search toolkit and starts with a mindset and intention to discover, explore and be open to what you may encounter. Networking requires time and effort and my recommendation is to approach it with a genuine desire to build meaningful connections and contribute to the professional community. It’s also about helping others, as much as it is about helping yourself.

When done correctly, networking for job search can help you obtain leads, referrals, advice, information and support to make it easier for you to find a job because:

People are more likely to introduce you to their circles, interview and appoint you if they know and trust you as it reduces risk for them.

Job listings tend to draw piles of applicants which put you in intense competition with many others.

The job you want may not be advertised at all! 70% of all jobs are not advertised and are searched through networks initially.

10 Tips for Effective Networking

To help you network and potentially secure your next job opportunity here are 10 tips for effective networking. When followed and done consistently you will find that you can effectively grow your network, elevate your personal brand and enjoy the process!

1. Develop a Contact List

It’s my experience that most people know more people than they think. Start by making a list of your friends, colleagues (past and present), neighbours, community, past employers and reach out to them. There are a variety of ways to do this, which I explore in the following tips.

2. Be Clear with Your Intention

Everyone is busy these days, so it’s important to be clear about why you want to speak with your contact and how long you may need from them. Some people may be happy to catch up for a coffee, others may prefer a brief phone chat. It’s about asking the right questions and being clear that you’d like their opinion and views based on the information you need from them. For example, there may be a specific person you’d like them to introduce you to, they may work in a specific industry you’d like to learn more about, or they may be employed in a job role you’d like to explore further. They may have specific information about current employment opportunities, the market and what opportunities really exist.

3. Focus on Building Relationships

Focus on building relationships and investing time (and maybe also the cost of a coffee or meal) in sharing with your contacts where you are at and what specific information you’d potentially like from them.

By being authentic and specific about your intentions as well as considerate about their potential time constraints, and offering to help them in any way you can, you are likely to uncover important information from your contacts in your job search. The goal may also be for them to keep in you ‘in mind’ if they hear about potential job openings or opportunities relevant to your skills and experience. But it’s not about asking them for a job! See the next tip to explain what I mean.

Relationships are a two way street and it’s therefore important for you to be considerate and ask your contacts how you can also help them if they’ve been kind enough to give you their time and knowledge.

4. Ask for Guidance Not a Job

Your contacts represent a wealth of potential information that can assist you. It’s more powerful to position the conversation around how they could help you, or what guidance or advice they may can provide, based on their experience, position and industry knowledge, rather than asking if they can help you get a job where they work.

5. Have a Strong Pitch

In networking conversations it’s essential that you’re able to clearly communicate your strengths, achievements and experience. Be proud and enthusiastic about what you’ve done and talk about it, because you are your greatest ambassador!

This is definitely the area many people struggle with, because it’s not our natural tendency to promote our own self worth. While I understand you’d prefer your results, resume and LinkedIn profile to do the talking for you, networking for job search is all about being able to clearly and confidently articulate your strengths and preferences.

If you need help in this area, I offer 1:1 sessions to help build your confidence and practice your pitch when you are approaching a networking conversation for this purpose.

6. Use LinkedIn to Grow Your Connections

In some cases, LinkedIn may be the first point of contact for re-connecting with the contact list you developed in step 1, developing a contact list. LinkedIn is so much more than a platform to apply for advertised roles. It’s also a professional networking platform that helps you stay front of mind with your connections and build new ones.

I encourage you to leverage the messaging function of this platform and make sure you are connected to EVERYONE you know. Connect, build relationships and then ask for support.

7. Be Ready to Network Anytime, Anyplace and with Anyone!

I have many stories I share with my clients about the curious places I’ve had networking conversations. The most recent was on a train, when I observed a fellow passenger (who I did not know) who was looking a little glum. I initiated a conversation, asking if she was okay, and we ended up having a lovely chat about a recent job interview (which she felt she’d bombed out in) and I offered her some tips for the next one.

You never know where and when your next opportunity will come from and so I encourage you to be curious and have a genuine interest in those around you, in any given situation you find yourself in. Even on a train!

8. Attend Networking Events

There are so many opportunities to attend networking events in Melbourne. MeetUps, seminars, workshops, industry events and networking events are readily available in your area and discoverable via online searches. Take the time to attend relevant networking events you are building your knowledge of the industry you want to work in, building your connections and creating potential opportunities for yourself. It’s also a great place to practice your pitch and develop industry and market intelligence that may just help you in a future job interview.

9. Recognise You Will Have Good Days and Bad Days

The reality is that not all people will respond to your request to help, and that’s okay. Most people are very busy and doing their best to keep all of the balls they are juggling up in the air. Don’t let anyone’s reluctance to help deter you or slow down your momentum.

Keep going! Persistence, being curious and having a sense of humour are vital ingredients for successful networking.

10. Be Grateful and Offer Thanks

I’m confident that if you follow the tips I’ve suggested, then you’ll be well on your way to opening new doors and securing your next job opportunity. You’ll also learn a lot about yourself and others along the way. Once your job search is over, please remember to thank the people that helped you in the networking phase of your job search. And you might even like to pay if forward for someone else!

Never Stop Networking

Don’t forget that networking is an ongoing process and should not be limited to times when you are only actively searching for a job. Cultivating relationships and nurturing your professional network regularly can provide long-term benefits and open doors to future opportunities. You never know what opportunities might present themselves to help you further your career.

In this article I’m sharing with you how to maximise your time on LinkedIn to help you achieve the success you deserve in your job search and networking efforts.

As the largest professional networking platform, LinkedIn can be a powerful tool in your job search. You need to be proactive and strategic in your use of the platform to make the most of it. Here are four tips to help you use LinkedIn proactively when networking for job search.

1. Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile

The first step in using LinkedIn proactively for job search is to optimise your profile. Your profile is your online professional identity and the first thing recruiters and hiring managers will see when they search for potential candidates. Make sure your profile is up-to-date, complete, and showcases your skills and experience.

Your headline and summary should accurately reflect your professional background and career goals. Use keywords relevant to your industry or job target to help recruiters find you easily. Highlight your achievements and skills, and include a professional-looking headshot.

Activate the ‘open to work’ feature and detail the types of roles you are looking for and the geographic locations where you’re available to work. Also add endorsements for your skills by asking former colleagues or connections to endorse you for skills that you want to showcase. This can help boost your credibility and increase your visibility in LinkedIn searches.

2. Reach Out to Colleagues, Potential Employers and Recruiters

The second step to using LinkedIn proactively is to build a targeted network. Focus on connecting with people who can help you achieve your career goals. This includes colleagues, alumni, mentors, industry professionals, and recruiters.

You can ask someone to join your professional network by sending them an invitation to connect. If they accept your invitation, they’ll become a 1st-degree connection. When inviting members to connect, I generally always recommend you send a personalised note to introduce yourself or add context to your relationship. When sending connection requests to people you know, use a familiar tone and reference mutual work or social experiences.

Before reaching out to potential employers, or recruiters, make sure you have a clear goal in mind. Having a clear goal will help you focus your message and make it easier for the person you are reaching out to respond. This could be to learn more about a specific company or role, to request an informational interview, or to ask about potential job openings.

LinkedIn reports that some LinkedIn members have conveyed that they don’t like receiving invitations from people they don’t know, and that they will often ignore or mark those invitations as spam. It’s therefore essential that when reaching out to potential employers and recruiters, you personalise your message and explain why you are interested in the company or role. Don’t just copy and paste a generic message to every connection or potential employer you come across. Take the time to research their background and understand their professional goals and interests. This will help you tailor your message to their specific needs and interests.

Be professional and polite, using proper grammar and spelling, addressing the person by name, and avoiding slang or informal language. Avoid using a pushy tone in your message. Instead, focus on building a genuine connection and expressing your interest in their organisation or role. Remember, your goal is to build a relationship and not to come across as desperate!

When crafting your message, make sure you are clear and concise about why you are reaching out. Explain who you are and why you are interested in connecting with them. Highlight your relevant experience and skills, and how you can add value to their organisation. Don’t forget to express your gratitude for their time and consideration.

3. Alternatives to Sending Invitations to Connect

If you do not feel comfortable sending invitations to connect to people you do not know, or you have a free LinkedIn membership and there are some restrictions on the invites you can send, there are other actions you can take. Here are two alternative and free ways to network with others, rather than inviting someone to connect:

Follow someone to see the updates and new content that they share in your feed, and establish familiarity by interacting with their posts.

Find and join a group that’s relevant to you, so you can meet other professionals with similar interests.

4. Engage with Your Network

As you build a targeted network, it’s essential to engage with them regularly. This means liking, commenting, and sharing relevant content related to your industry. If you feel nervous about posting your own content, that’s okay. Instead, clean up your newsfeed by following relevant industry leaders and organisations and re-post their updates with your thoughts, or comment on their updates.

This activity is visible to your connections and hiring managers and recruiters who may be viewing your profile and helps you stay top of mind with potential employers and recruiters. It also allows you to build relationships with other professionals in your industry and can lead to valuable connections and opportunities down the line.

Keep in mind that while LinkedIn is a valuable tool, it’s not a magic bullet and relationships are built over time. Be patient and remember that networking takes time and effort. With a curious nature and a proactive and strategic approach, you can use LinkedIn to make valuable connections and take your job search to the next level.

At a recent webinar I ran with Karen Hollenbach from Think Bespoke, we explored online and offline strategies for tapping into the hidden job market and networking for jobs.

We ran this webinar because we know, from our client’s experience, that the most powerful way for you to make your next career move successfully is to use a combination of face to face (offline) and LinkedIn (online) networking strategies.

I always chuckle when I hear Karen say “you can not live on a digital diet alone”. What she means by this it that you really do need to use the power of your relationships and your networks when you are thinking about making your next career move. And this can often mean taking the time and making the effort to have face to face conversations and then following them up on LinkedIn.

Networking as a 21st Century Phenomenon

What’s important to understand is that networking now is a phenomenon of the twenty-first century. Quite a few years back it was okay to simply have your resume, speak to a recruiter and they would navigate the market for you. This is an area that people find extremely difficult and it’s something that they can be quite anxious about, they are not comfortable and networking face to face is feels very hard. Clients often say to me ‘Is this really something I need to do?’ The answer is yes!

A lot of people say to me that networking is for people who have a product, looking for opportunities where you can sell that product, but the difference when networking for jobs is that you’re building connections and relationships to get leads. While the person in front of you may not be the person who will help you, they might know the person who can and they can help you get to them.

Networking Will Help You Access the Hidden Job Market

Have you heard of the concept of the hidden job market? The hidden job market is a term used to describe jobs that aren’t posted online or advertised in any other way. What’s very scary at the moment are reports that up to 80% of jobs are secured this way. Some of my clients have heard this statistic and will ask me ‘are these jobs on SEEK even real jobs?’ The good news is, yes, the advertised jobs are real. I have worked with clients who’ve successfully applied for and secured jobs advertised on SEEK, However, what you see advertised online is really only 20% of the opportunities.

There is so much more behind the scenes to find. And what’s really important in regard to networking is that you can go through the front door, where we know only 20% of the opportunities are, or we can go through the side door and find people who are able to help us and inform us of what the opportunities are within their industry and organisation.

The 6 Key Success Factors for Networking for Job Search

I work with clients in the mid stage of their career who wish to achieve greater success in their job search. Here are 6 key success factors that will improve your results when networking for job search.

Make a List

It is really important to know who you want to target in your face to face networking conversations for job search and to make a list of these prospects.

Consider who you know who might have access to the organisations, industries or jobs you’re looking for. Take some time to make a list of the colleagues, friends, family, parents at school and people that you’ve worked with in the past.

An example is parents who go to sporting activities and may be talking about their frustrations. One of my clients was having an open conversation with another client bout being unemployed. He’d been being looking for a job in IT, and by following the steps I recommend, was able to get an invite to be introduced to someone who had a role he was very interested in exploring.

Ask the Right Questions to Open Doors

Most people have concerns about contacting people out of the blue, but I can assure you that people want to help. It’s about opening up and having the conversation and understanding who to speak with.

Once you are in the conversation it’s important to share your story about what’s going on. When you share your story you will lead the conversation to what you’re actually looking for.

The question that’s really important is ‘will you be able to help me?’ or ‘do you have someone you can connect me with that can help me?’

Although you may be feeling anxious and uncomfortable about what to talk about, because you’re here to meet someone who might be able to help you, try to inject a sense of curiosity in your manner. If you think about these conversations to learn and maybe find advice about what’s going on, this will take some of the pressure of you and help you be more natural in your conversations.

There will come a point in these conversations when you need to thank them for their advice and ask if there is anyone else they could perhaps connect you with. If there is, you then need to ask if they are able to please give you the name and maybe contact number. You should also ask if it’s okay to mention their name, because the relationship with the person who refers will play an important role in encouraging their contact to open the door.

Please ensure you check the best way to approach this. For example they may suggest that they will connect you. I know this feels uncomfortable, but you must ask these questions or those doors will remain closed.

Your Pitch

You must have your pitch ready when you are having conversations with others about your plans. While humility is important, at some point you must be able to stand out, be uncomfortable and really highlight what your strengths are. You need to be able to package a little story about yourself and articulate where you’ve worked, your expertise, strengths, projects and achievements. And this must be relevant to the situation you are in at the time you are sharing this information.

Here’s an example of how I may approach this.

My name is Marina from Letz Create. I’m passionate about career coaching and I am really looking for opportunities to work in the career coaching space and I would really love to work with organsations. I noticed that you have quite a lot of information in this space, or what’s your opinion about the career coaching space?

This approach will ensure you end up creating a conversation and they have heard something relevant about you. Clients who work with me on developing their pitch, enjoy working through their resumes with me to draw out their story. This helps them more confidently deliver relevant information about themselves in networking conversations and their job interviews. They have to learn what their strengths and achievements are. We will then massage that into a really good pitch for them then to use when they’re networking.

Attend the Right Networking Events for Your Goals

This involves understanding where your potential employer plays.

As an example, I’m currently working with quite a few engineers. They need to be active in the Engineers Australia association, which includes colleagues, project leaders and employers. When you talk to people in this association you’ll learn when the next big project is coming up. And by attending seminars, you’ll be able to talk to the people who are the decision makers for these roles.

You must therefore know your industry associations. If you’re an Accountant, it’s the CPA association. If you’re an engineer it’s the Engineers Association. If you’re part of human resources or learning development or industry development you need to be a part of AHRI (Australian Human Resources Institute). It’s about learning, education and making connections. These people are the ones who will know what’s going on and where the opportunities are that you can access. They will have the right connections.

Research and Cold Call

This is something I’ve done a lot myself to help open doors. Quite a few years ago I was informed there was a new program called Skilled for Growth coming to Melbourne. Having a strong training background, I was very excited about this role. When my manager brought this to my attention, I felt it was a great opportunity. However, this opportunity was not going to be advertised on SEEK.

I researched the organisations

I found the people who ran the program

I called them

I introduced myself and had the right pitch

I explained who I was and why I was passionate

The result? I called 28 of the 30 organisations and on the 28th call I achieved success! We agreed to meet as they felt I’d really suit what they were looking for as a smaller organisation. This meant I was able to go in and meet that group, and I successfully spent the next four years working with them!

While my hope is that you won’t need to make 28 calls like I did, you will need to be tenacious when it comes to researching and cold calling. In larger organisations and IT organisations, people find out that there are new projects such as the NBN, the metro and the tunnels. Once you find this out, you need to find out who the recruiter is and who you can speak to in order to find out more so you know who you can call to then pitch your services to them.

Overcoming Anxiety

It is very common to feel anxious about contacting people or entering conversations where you need to talk about yourself. The way to overcome this is to be very prepared and structured. It’s about what you would like to deliver and highlight to create a curiosity about yourself. I encourage you to be courageous and to also have a bit of fun! Ask the right questions and talk to people so it becomes a conversation, which becomes a lead, which becomes a job, which becomes your employment.

The 6 Key Success Factors for Networking for Job Search is really a step by step approach. At any point where you have an opportunity, it’s important to ask for what you want. Ask if you can take them out for coffee and have a conversation with them. Ask to connect on LinkedIn.

And what I believe about networking is that it’s not always about what you get, but about what you give. It’s about the spirit of reciprocity. It’s very much about in the opportunities when you’re going out and having conversations. When you give something to someone and help them, they will always remember you and want to give something back.

You can’t choose your family, but you can choose your job, so I’d like to share with you today my advice for how to approach networking for your career. It’s really important that you network throughout your career, not just when you need a new job!

This is because the relationships that you build over time will have a great influence on the opportunities made available to you. In an increasingly competitive job market, with constant changes within and across many industries, if people know you, they are more likely to recommend you for job opportunities.

When I say the word ‘networking’ what does this mean to you? If you are a business owner or in a sales or business development role, you may instantly think that networking relates to sales people or business owners exchanging business cards at speed networking events. While this may be the case when your goal for networking is to generate leads for email lists, when it comes to networking for your career, it’s a little different.

In this Business Insider Australia article Chris Pash talks about the 5 Golden Rules of Networking, which I’ve adapted for networking for the purpose of helping your professional development, because there are some subtle differences when networking for your career.

Following my steps will help you network more effectively to research, explore, learn and create opportunities in the industries you wish to pursue. These steps include:

Be inspired and know what you want

Be Bold and cultivate relationships

Be curious and learn.

To help you understand these three steps and how they might apply to you, I’d like to introduce you to John. He is one of my clients and an engineer who wanted to work out the best way to speak to someone about career and job opportunities.

I suggested he join Engineers Australia, an industry organisation committed to advancing engineering and the professional development of their members. Engineers Australia is the largest and most diverse body of engineers in Australia. As Australia’s principal engineering association they serve and represent over 100,000 professionals at every level, across all fields of practice.

As I explain each of these steps I will also share John’s experience.

Be Inspired & Know What you Want

To invest time in networking you need to find the inspiration to do it. It’s so important that you believe in your dream, take action and back yourself.

By knowing what you are trying to achieve you will get value from the time you spend on networking, which could mean attending face to face forums or being part of online forums on LinkedIn or Facebook (or within specific technical or industry forums online).

Where you are in your career will influence what you may want, and examples may be:

Research employment trends / job opportunities in your industry

Learn more about new or emerging industries

Research study requirements for specific role types

Explore passion projects, hobbies or new business start up ideas.

For John he knew that he wanted to find out more about how to further develop his career in Australia as an engineer.

Be Bold & Cultivate Relationships

This step is about doing your homework about who you want to network with and meeting or reaching out and following up. It is essential that you find the key people within the industry you are researching and learn to ask questions of someone even if you feel intimidated by them.

“Can I please seek your advice?” and ‘What are your recommendations for someone . . . ?” are examples of how you might approach this.

In my experience, senior leaders of most industries enjoy being asked their opinions and making recommendations to those who are brave enough to ask. By being bold and approaching them politely and explaining clearly what it is you want to talk to them about, you will increase your success with cultivating these networks and gaining useful information from their knowledge and experience.

In John’s case, he reached out to a senior leader within the engineering fraternity, who he met at an Engineering Australia networking event. John found that this new contact was very happy to provide him with some invaluable advice.

By being more systematic and making sure you follow up a relevant contact you meet at a networking event or engage with in an online forum, you are beginning to cultivate your relationship with this person.

It may also be as simple as reaching out to industry leaders online and inviting them to connect via LinkedIn. If you attend an event they are speaking at, introduce yourself at the end of the event and thank them for sharing their knowledge. Let them know where you are at and ask them if they have any advice for you. You can then research their organisation, follow their blogs (if relevant) or even subscribe to their newsletter.

Be Curious & Learn

This step is really about adjusting your mindset, which is how I often help my clients.

If you have an open mind and have followed steps one and two, then being curious will ensure you are more open to the potential opportunities that come with reaching out to industry leaders, attending industry events and engaging in online forums.

And this is the fundamental difference between networking for business and networking for career.

If you are curious to learn about new opportunities, actively listening to and learning from the wisdom of others, then you are an open book. Which is why this step is so important. When people you meet at networking events experience your passion and interest, they will be naturally drawn to you and want to know more about your experience and plans for the future.

If you are not curious and open to learning, then you will miss these unique and invaluable opportunities to make connections which you can then cultivate (step 2) as you develop the knowledge you need to develop a plan for your next career move.
